My fan has been replaced. It now unlocks almost immediately (video below).
When I got my truck I had a power steering leak that Nibbles and I fixed immediately. He came over and walked me through replacing a high pressure line. But when I got the fan clutch off, I found this:
PS fluid caked on the thermal spring. I threw some PB blaster on there and voila:
Good as new. Also my fan was a 9 blade fan (I’m supposed to have a 10 blade fan (the new fan is a 10 blade unit)), It was also hella cracked:
There was at least 8 cracks like that all around the thing.
I was having trouble holding the pulley tool and turning the fan clutch wrench at the same time so I texted MonkeyPuzzle just as he was leaving work (which is semi close to my house) and asked him if he could drop by to hold the pulley tool. He did and stayed maybe 15 minutes. I got a picture of his Civic behind our Odyssey. Such Honda, Much Wow:
We ended up breaking the pulley tool:

Its no big deal, it was cheap and I’d rarely use it. He was a huge help though, I couldnt have done it without him.
I also removed my throttle cable shroud because I was tired of taking it on and off to do any sort of work under the hood.
And Pro Tip; to organize bolts and fasteners you remove from your engine bay, place them in a magnetic parts tray and once youre done with that part, place them in an egg carton and label them with tape and sharpie:
Thats a trick I learned back when I was fixing computers.
Oh and here’s the video of my truck revving:
After the first rev you can actually hear my engine now :)

I have to do a fan clutch job soon myself. Unfortunately, it’s not nearly as simple as yours.
#V12problems
Running significantly better now, I would hope? Cooler, smoother at all?
Have you pulled the throttle body off to check for grime? When I first got the HEMIWagon, I pulled the throttle body off, and discovered that the crappy PCV system caused oil to build up on the inside of the throttle body. I cleaned it off (and now I have a brand new intake, and motor, of course) but while it didn’t really affect how the car ran, the actual throttle response felt a little smoother. Somewhere I have pictures of it, it was pretty bad. Thinking back, I may even pull the throttle body off and see what it looks like with about 8k on the new motor.
What you need to do next is some form of CAI for the throttle noise, and then get yourself some throaty muffler.
A twin turbo kit wouldn’t hurt either, but admittedly, it’s a little over played. Maybe just a procharger? Just for teh lulz of course.

Since you brought up many different points, I’m gonna quote you and form a mini response to each of them for simplicity’s sake.

It wasnt easy. The fan clutch was so close to the fan pulley that I had to use a box end wrench to get the pulley bolt off so I could use the pulley tool , I couldnt use my ratchet. It was also really on there tight, as evidenced by the bent pulley tool.

Ive only driven it around the block so far, but I’ll let you know tomorrow after my work commute.

According to the manual; as part of the 120k mile service I have to do valve cover gaskets and head gaskets, I’ll take the intake and throttle body off then, maybe throw some MAF cleaner in there. I have cleaned out the IAC Valve though, that was disgusting.
What you need to do next is some form of CAI for the throttle noise, and then get yourself some throaty muffler.
Eventually I wanna do a Cold Air Intake, for 2 main reasons:
1) My plastic intake hose is pretty brittle, I expect it to start cracking at some point
2) My plastic intake hose is butt ugly and a CAI would look a million times better.
And I have a Gibson catback on my list of mods to do once I can afford it. Also, no turbo. I like NA motors.

I wonder if this could be my problem, or if it’s normal...
Before you cleaned the clutch what was it doing, holding the fan on when the engine was started cold?

It would keep the fan on for a really long time, the fan would also spin at engine speed. It wasnt locking up completely, but it wasnt unlocking as it should. Try and turn the fan by hand, if its too easy than your fan clutch has failed, if its nearly impossible then it has seized

I don’t think it’s seized because it’s not a constant thing. It just seems to do it when it shouldn’t. Right now, it’s once in a while, but in the winter it was always staying on from startup. Seems kind of backwards to me.
I’ll go give it a spin in any case
